Beginning January 1, celebrate a new space for the arts with the revival of the historic 1937
Little Stage Theater @ SoBe Arts

SOBE ARTS CABARET, Music, Theater, Multimedia - bar & tapas by Red Light

Premieres at 9:00pm on New Year's Day, January 1, 2010 and includes a VIP Champaign Reception at 8:30pm.

NOTE: All regularly scheduled performances were sold out! Two shows have been added by popular demand, Friday, January 22 and Saturday January 23. Reserved Seating only. If you wanted to see the production but could not get tickets this is your chance.

Under the direction of Executive Artistic Director Carson Kievman, SoBe Institute of the Arts will welcome the new year January 1st with a fresh and compelling multimedia arts cabaret to celebrate the renovation and reopening of the Little Stage Theater @ SoBe Arts. The Grand Opening Cabaret will feature an innovative and stylized experience that incorporates musical and visual elements from the 1930s and 1940s, around the time the 1937 theater was first built. "We want to honor the historic nature of the theater," explained Dr. Kievman, "but at the same time we're looking to create a very contemporary experience. We've interspersed the original torch songs with theatrical vignettes from other eras, and together they make for a bizarre and compelling look at relationships." Kievman adds that there will also be scenes from the popular "Tunes 'N Toons" production that was commissioned by Miami Beach to close November's Sleepless Night event, combining esoteric live music from the 1930's with classic film animation and live action.
"A Funhouse Ride for Adults."

Featuring Montserrat Franco as Betty Boop, Andres Lefevre as Cab Calloway's Ghost and starring actors Ivette Viñas, Andres Lefevre, Philip de la Cal & Montserrat Franco. Created & Directed by Carson Kievman .

Conductor, Carson Kievman - Keyboards, Kiki Sanchez - Clarinet, Paul Gordillo - Tenor Saxophone, Juan Silveira - Drums, Tony Suarez - Bass, James Quinlan - Trumpet, Osvaldo Fleitas

TUNES N' TOONS

Sunday, November 8, 2009 5:30AM

TRUST US...THIS IS THE ONE NOT TO BE MISSED!

Nov. 7 (8), 2009 - 5:30am - Tunes N' Tons, a quasi qwazy pre-dawn extravaganza of cartoons and live music.  Lummus Park Main Stage (8th Street & Ocean Drive). Cartoons at dawn are a ritual American experience. SoBe Arts brings Sleepless Night to a colorful close by celebrating a visual art form that has long embraced both jazz and classical music. A blend of film projections and live performances opens with a late-late cabaret set – one that does not cater to children, veering from comic to provocative and hallucinatory. We welcome the Technicolor dawn skies with hues of the postmodern, orchestral standards twisted and re-imagined into the loony tunes, merry melodies, and irreverent reveries of a golden age of animation.

sephardic SEPHARDIC MUSIC - Romantic Songs of Spanish Jews

Montserrat Franco, Soprano

Claude Kadoch, Guitar & Darhukka

Sunday, September 27, 2009 12:00 p.m.

Free & Open to the Public

For centuries, the legacy and traditions of Sepharad (Spain in Hebrew) was transmitted through generations of Sephardic Jews on their Diaspora after they were ousted of Spain in 1492 and settled in several parts of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They left Spain but never their language “Djudeo-Espanyol” also called “Ladino” (a language which defer from the Spanish or Castillan spoken by Christians at that time and which includes Hebrew elements and vocabulary from the local languages) neither the culture which includes an amazing oral tradition : tales, poems and songs or “Romanceros” just as the “Trovadours” will perform in the Middle Age.

The vast collection of Romances preserved and transmitted for generations will come back to life on September 27th when Singer “Montserrat Franco” will present in an unique venue accompanied by the Israeli Moroccan Artist Claude Kadoch. These songs express not only these historical changes but also the entire life-cycle of that people, with their moments of joy, sorrow and love, its festivities and celebrations. This rich and varied culture is the basis of the Ladino repertoire, a musical treasure that never ceased to grow in the new places where the Sephardic Jews settled.

About the Artist:

Montserrat Franco, a graduated Vocal Professor, ethnomusicologist and grantee of several scholarships by the European Parliament in Madrid, Spain and the State of Israel researched about the Sephardic Romances and Traditions from 1999 to 2002.

She was commissioned by the State of Israel to perform around the world as a truly sephardic artist during International Literature Fairs and Symposiums of the Spanish Language always sponsored by the AECI (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation)

Food will be provided by El Patio Andaluz (Tazin) an authentic Spanish Moroccan Restaurant.

Beverages will be provided by Terra Espana

sephardic

Sephardic music was born in medieval Spain, with cantigas being performed at the royal courts. Since then, it has picked up influences from across Spain, Morocco, Argentina, Turkey, Greece and various popular tunes from Spain and further abroad. There are three types of Sephardic songs -- topical and entertainment songs, romance songs and spiritual or ceremonial songs. Lyrics can be in several languages, including Hebrew for religious songs, and Ladino.

These song traditions spread from Spain to Morocco (the Western Tradition) and several parts of the Ottoman Empire (the Eastern Tradition) including Greece, Jerusalem, the Balkans and Egypt. Sephardic music adapted to each of these locales, assimilating North African high-pitched, extended ululations; Balkan rhythms, for instance in 9/8 time; and the Turkish maqam mode.

Songs which are song by women are traditionally sung while performing household tasks, without accompaniment or harmony. Tambourines and other percussion instruments are sometimes used, especially in wedding songs. Men have added oud and qanún to the instrumentation, and more modern performers incorporate countless other imported instruments.

(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Sephardic Jews, or Sephardim in Hebrew, is the general term used to refer to the descendants of the Jews who lived in the Iberian Peninsula for many centuries and who in 1492, during The Inquisition, were forced to either convert or go into exile. Some went to Portugal, Italy and France (from where they were later expelled, many went to establish communities in the Ottoman Empire, in what we know today as Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and parts of Hungary, Rumania and the Balkans and yet others made their home in the north of Africa, mainly in Morocco and Algeria and some in Tunisia. They had left behind their material possessions but took with them their religion and their culture, their customs and traditions and of course, their beautiful language, the Judeo-Spanish, which continued to develop and take from the different areas where they lived. The Judeo Spanish as we know it today, includes archaic forms of Spanish, Castilian, Catalan, Galician and Portuguese with elements of Hebrew, Greek, Turkish, Arabic and more recently, Italian, French and modern Spanish.

QUEEN KELLY (Erich Von Stroheim/USA/1928)
Starring Gloria Swanson as “Queen Kelly”
In 1928, after years of struggles within the studio system, master director Erich Von Stroheim found the opportunity to create his crowning achievement: a romance of intoxicating beauty, counterbalanced with moral corruption. Gloria Swanson, powerful in 1928 enough to be both star and producer, stars as an innocent convent girl who falls under the spell of a handsome prince on the eve of his marriage to a diabolical queen. Kino presents the critically-acclaimed restoration of Von Stroheim’s epic, which incorporates many of the scenes that caused Swanson to shut down the film.

MICRO-LISTENING
a microphone building workshop
conducted by isaw’s
resident artist DAVID DUNN

micro-listening
The Micro-Listening Project is an art/science strategy for increasing the monitoring of our environment through sound. It hopes to provide new inexpensive technologies that can facilitate an increase in our collective environmental sensitivity and discovery of unknown natural and human-made phenomena, provide novel tools for sound artists, and contribute
towards practical environmental problem solving.

The project focuses upon the design of inexpensive but highly effective audio transducer systems for bio acoustic and sound art monitoring of otherwise hidden aspects of our auditory environment that are not audible through use of conventional microphones.
In addition to these technological advancements for listening, the project seeks to document a wide diversity of such sound worlds for both demonstration of the transducers and general aesthetic revelation of our acoustic environment. Precise instructions on how to
use and construct these devices will be part of this workshop. The devices are designed to allow as wide a distribution of their use as possible by both amateurs and professionals.

Free Performance and Open Discussion about Electronic/Digital Music with Gustavo Matamoros

Come experience the new music world of electronic and digital sound performance.  Did you know that learning to control and perform with digital and electronic devices is very much like learning to play a traditional musical instrument?  Gustavo Matamoros is a composer/performer with 20 plus years experience with altered and conceptual  soundscapes and electronic music experimentation.  In other words, Matamoros has become a virtuosos by way of inspiration and very long and determined practice on his "instrument".

OPEN FRIDAY this week will include a special performance on digital/electronic instruments and an open discussion with the artist about what inspires his creations, how he has survived as one of the true experimentalists in the City of Miami environment and anything else you care to discuss with this wonderful musician.

This special entertaining and educational experience will be followed by refreshments and a chance to intermingle. 305-674-9220 or info@sobemusic.org - MAP

Interactive Open Rehearsal with members of our award winning faculty - click for video sample (wmv)

FacultyAsmallEver wonder how musicians prepare for a public concert? Join us for a unique glimpse behind the scenes this Friday while our faculty rehearse musical works that they have seen for the first time.  Watch them communicate with each other and piece together the music phrase by phrase.  Ask questions of the musicians even as they rehearse.  All questions from novices and musicians alike will be welcome.  You can even put in your "two-cents."  Follow the process as they work out each nuance step by step until the ensemble can play the music all the way through.  This special entertaining and educational experience will be followed by refreshments and a chance to mingle with the musicians and fellow participants.

PLEASE RSVP BY 5:00 P.M. FRIDAY JUNE 22 VIA (305) 674 9220 (Space is limited to 58 participants, including faculty, staff and Music for Adults Summer Program Students).
